FORESTS AND CARBON

The cycle of carbon, an animated sequence for a documentary on Native Forest.

CHALLENGE

The climate crisis is probably the biggest problem that humanity has ever faced, and its main cause is the increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This is a problem many of us know but few really understand, and that’s why we aimed to explain the cycle of carbon and its role in our survival in a very didactic way.

OUR TAKE

We designed the frames with iconic elements to explain the carbon cycle. Graphic and simple schemes without components that would be perceived as distracting were illustrated, as the use of color was applied in a schematic way, using red for Carbon, heat and deforestation.
Then we decided to build each frame as a scale model.

We explain the cycle of carbon with simple visual tricks that encourage the viewer to pay attention, adding movements with diverse animation tricks which help to perceive handmade and reinforce the technique.

THE RESULT

The sequence works as part of the documentary but it has also been used as a short film on its own.

It was originally released with the Native Forests documentary written and produced by our friends at Planta Alta and funded by the United Nations Program for the Reduction of Carbon Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation and the Inter-american Development Bank B.I.D.

Since the industrial revolution, there has been a 42% increase in atmospheric CO2. It’s time to start collectively putting C02 back into the ground and we are thrilled to help people comprehend this and be part of the movement.
