PAYADA PA´ SATAN

Short animated movie to help raise awareness about the impact of mega mining.

CHALLENGE

Mega mining is an industry that extracts precious metals. Its methodology requires the use of toxic elements and demands large amounts of water and energy, and the damage that it causes to the environment is irreversible. It also involves many situations of extreme violence in local communities.

In spite of the fact that there are many documentaries and feature films that deal with mega mining, we wanted to raise awareness using animation and fiction to reach an audience that didn’t naturally pay attention to these documentaries.

OUR TAKE

Payadas are typical songs with stories from the northern regions of Argentina. This is a Payada that takes place near a mine in a poisoned environment, as life dies away and its author fears the devil is rising to earth.

The ecosystem is very important in this story, we chose to use real plants on the scale models. A small bonsai tree beside the house and tiny cactuses, tiny flowers and small branches in the background recreating bushes and woods. The skies were hand painted on backdrops.

We built disguises and masks and shot characters on a greenscreen that matched camera movements and lights with the shots of backgrounds. Both characters and backgrounds were shot in slow motion, this adds weight to the movements and a cinematic look and feel.

The Short film was released with a small animated documentary; both videos were launched together. The animated documentary was written with activist and author Nicolás Gutman and it was based on his book explaining how Mega mining operates in Argentina.

THE RESULT

This was a self-managed project, as we had the chance to deeply connect with a lot of people from the environmental movements of Argentina and both videos were useful tools for the movement. Teachers and activists consider these videos as their own when it comes to promoting their ideas.

Released in 2014, it reached hundreds of thousands of views and had a major impact on the environmental and audiovisual world. It won over 50 awards at various festivals around the world.
